This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

The Indian borderland 18801900 Thomas Hungerford Holdich Books

Holdich's book Indian Borderland is an unknown classic of geography, surveying and adventure. He worked for the British government in India as a soldier and surveyor, in fact one of the primary geographers who helped create the modern borders of Pakistan and Afghanistan. His book-- which discusses more than a decade of exploration in Afghanistan in and around 1890-- is a fascinating account of early European contact with Afghanistan, and is pertinent for today. Surprisingly little has changed: jihads, rough frontier warfare, civil unrest, foreign intervention --today the ugly American--and incredible hardship in one of the toughest places on this planet--the frontier of Pakistan and Afghanistan. This is where Al-queda and Taliban now operate, confounding the American and Pakistani forces. What is even more interesting is that Holdich's book is not a dry academic thesis, but filled with vivid descriptons of contact with Afghanis, of the turbulent landscape and the incredible beauty. The borderland in the title refers to the fact that when he wrote the book Pakistan did not exist and he and his team were in fact creating the border of modern Pakistan and Afghanistan. At the time the British empire forces in India wanted to create a definite border between their India and the wilds of Afghanistan--partly because of their fear of Russian incursions into the region. How little has changed.Holdich and others fufilled this task often under dangerous wartime conditions.
